YouTube's star lecturer dies at 47
From CNN:
Randy Pausch, the professor whose "last lecture" became a runaway phenomenon on the Internet and was turned into a best-selling book, died Friday of pancreatic cancer, Carnegie Mellon University announced on its Web site.
Pausch, 47, a computer science professor, delivered the lecture, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," at Carnegie Mellon in September 2007, a month after being told he had three to six months to live because his cancer had returned.
More here. And do take an hour and a quarter to watch this video of the moving lecture:

Ahh, so sad. The man had a great heart.

Oh dear. He was the surprise speaker at my daughter's graduation six weeks ago at Carnegie Mellon and he was so vibrant, so energetic, and so beloved. After charging the graduates to live their dreams and make mistakes and make a difference in the world, he picked up his wife at the end of his speech and carried her off the stage in his arms, to a standing ovation.

just wow.
My son graduated from there last year and all he had was Bill Cosby calling them Nerds.
He's not the first person CMU produced with tremendous willpower and heart. Remember the young man a few years ago whose arm was trapped while hiking alone in some western mountains? After hanging from it for some length of time (days?) he amputated it, by himself, with a pocketknife, then hiked back to civilization.

Okay, I'll admit it: I choked up at the end... :-(
