gondry enjoys box

Gondry_slideshow2

NEW YORK—Director Michel Gondry has spent nearly a week developing his latest flight of artistic fancy by playing make-believe in a large corrugated cardboard box, sources close to the daring filmmaker announced Tuesday.

The 45-year-old Gondry, who directed the critically acclaimed films Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind, reportedly dragged the washing-machine box into the foyer of his $2.1 million Upper West Side apartment after it was discarded by a neighbor Saturday morning. Using only a crayon and his imagination, Gondry was able to effortlessly transform the box into a submarine, a spaceship, and a castle.

He also reportedly turned the box into a super-secret fort.

Alas, a memory of childhood before cable TV, never mind netflix, ipods, textmessaging and cellphones that do all of the above.

An empty refrigerator box was once all of these and much, much, more.

God, do I feel old.

Yup.

Likewise when I was a boy I ripped the flaps off the box of our new refrigerator, climbed inside the tread of my corregated tank like a hamster in its wheel, took off into the woods behind our house mowing through undergrowth, crushing saplings, flattening wind-fallen limbs, all the while lobbing artillery shells from my turret until I’d gone miles in my mind and bumped into a 3 inch birch trunk that stopped me short ten feet from where I’d begun.

I’m sure Gondry's imagination’s still intact and that he had as much fun. I suppose part of being a director is being able to run your childhood into your art seamlessly.
