A Look at Blackwater, from Iraq to New Orleans

Chris Hedges in Truthdig:

One of the arguments used to assuage our fears that the mass movement being built by the Christian right is fascist at its core is that it has not yet created a Praetorian Guard, referring to the paramilitary force that defied legal constraints, made violence part of the political discourse and eventually plunged ancient Rome into tyranny and despotism. A paramilitary force that operates outside the law, one that sows fear among potential opponents and is capable of physically silencing those branded by their leaders as traitors, is a vital instrument in the hands of despotic movements. Communist and fascist movements during the last century each built paramilitary forces that operated beyond the reach of the law.

And yet we may be further down this road than we care to admit. Erik Prince, the secretive, mega-millionaire, right-wing Christian founder of Blackwater, the private security firm that has built a formidable mercenary force in Iraq, champions his company as a patriotic extension of the U.S. military. His employees, in an act as cynical as it is deceitful, take an oath of loyalty to the Constitution. These mercenary units in Iraq, including Blackwater, contain some 20,000 fighters. They unleash indiscriminate and wanton violence against unarmed Iraqis, have no accountability and are beyond the reach of legitimate authority. The appearance of these paramilitary fighters, heavily armed and wearing their trademark black uniforms, patrolling the streets of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, gave us a grim taste of the future. It was a stark reminder that the tyranny we impose on others we will one day impose on ourselves.

Great link, Ruchira. Many thanks. Chilling piece, though it's not as if we didn't know it was coming to this.

I really appreciate the items you are posting to 3qd. Thanks again.

What is not very well known is that the contract with Blackwater was originally signed by the Clinton administration. But it was after 9/11, Iraq and a like minded administration in the White House that this shadowy outfit came to full bloom.

Olivia, chilling indeed. When I first heard Chris Hedges discuss his book on C-Span in January, I remember thinking:

These guys will be coming home some day and they will have to find jobs. What will be more logical than the local police force? And I am sure that in "law & order" situations, they wouldn't be reaching just for their night sticks or their taser guns.

Ruchira, thanks for posting this. The implications past, present and future of this Praetorian Guard--a religiously motivated private military that can have the United States military beholden to it on one hand and on the other hand the US military becoming increasingly evangelized is truly frightening. The fascist tendency in the United States now has its military arm. Its as though Zia-ul-Haq's vision for Pakistan and his many inroads into this direction have become the vision of the US. It is truly frightening.

And in a world so dependent now on technology for almost all transactions and information and a world where that technology is controlled and owned by a few giant corporate entities who also control and own everything else what is the implication of privatized militaries?

What has been the role, I wonder of Blackwater in trying to instigate sectarian violence in Iraq what has been its role in all the senseless so called suicide bombings? The goal of dividing Iraq is a US goal, on the evidence of sectarian divisions. Astonishingly enough the US congress was discussing and voting on legislation for the division of a sovereign country Iraq! It is hard to imagine that present day Shia, Sunni Christian Iraqis under so much external threats would destroy themselves and each other and their history which has stood mostly unharmed for centuries. So then what becomes the role of Blackwater in Iraq which is paid to secure US interests and seems to have its own very strong religious agenda which is tied into the religious and political agenda for the country?

Eric Prince's testimony at the hearing this week that Blackwater reveals to most who may not have known this that Blackwater has air power and trained pilots who are religious zealots and mercenaries.

What are the scenarios past, present and future of this power and capability? Chris Hedges points to a scenario in the future of a terrorist act which could activate entities like Blackwater into the frontline on the streets, militarize and government of America---I wonder what is the power of Blackwater to instigate such an act in the first place?

Chris Hedges reminds us that Blackwater was supported and used under the Clinton administration too. And has grown since then. Now we have Mrs. Clinton, set to be elected, the Manchurian candidate, endorsed by Bush and mouthing her specific religious credentials for the considerable and powerful religious right. Change is not on the horizon.
As Chris Hedges reminded us earlier, remember that Hitler followed Bismark.
