I’m responding to a number of items here. This posting has me wondering , is there too much violins in the media, specifically on 3DQ? There was Elatia’s interview with Keith Hill and then the Paul Dateh and inka one jam and now this, the latest incidence of violins; The Violin Dude.
Gentle readers, let me assure you; under no conditions can there ever be too much violins in the media just as there can never be too much violins in any enclosed space. Why? Because it’s just bad grammar and hence unthinkable.
I know some of you many point to the Dateh/inca duet as a classic case of black on black violins but look closely at the video again; there was only one violin involved. The other guy (Mr.one) was playing vinyl. Admissibly, as fine as a taut catgut but vinyl nonetheless. I love that jam and many thoughts came to mind as I watched and heard that piece.
1.What would it take to put a Keith Hill violin in Mr. Dateh hands? I mean if autocratic despots can have Weapons of Mass Destruction can’t killer musicians get their hands on killer instruments; Axes of Good, so to speak.
2.This is as sweet as Sugarcane Harris on Hot Rats.
3.When they broke into “Crazy” I was reminded of the last time I liked pop music. Not an uncommon response I guess but hey! That’s pop music.
And now the Violin Dude (Alex Depue); an edgier player maybe not as smooth but very cagey, very fast and Dateh’s equal when it comes to the killer quote;
1.The “Owner of a Lonely Heart” bit; beautiful and so apt. Check the original Yes version. The sound that helped boost that song into platinum was the use of a sampled “orchestral hit”; massed strings and horns hitting a massive chord but all triggered by a sampler. Here Depue executes the song without a Synclavier or Fairlight in sight and redeems it by letting the melody shine through. He is both critical and appreciative.
2.I lost it when he broke into “Smooth Criminal”. Prior to “Crazy” it was Alien Ant Farm’s cover of this song that briefly made me love pop music again.
3.Whatever happened to Alien Ant Farm?
4.Can we get a Keith Hill violin to Mr. Depue? It must be easier than going to Mars.
In closing, at this point in time, I think the truth is obvious; if the ends can justify the means then violins are the only option; Play on MacDuff!
