I learned at the Bonnard show you reference that for this gorgeous, decades-long series, there was a model: the artist's wife, who spent many hours in the bathtub to give him what he needed.

Speaking of perceptions, it would seem the female's torso has been gruesomely slashed, twice? And that blood is both in the water and smeared all over her face?
