Palestinians and Israelis: Face 2 Face

From the Face 2 Face website:

Screenhunter_06_mar_08_1724

...these people look the same; they speak almost the same language, like twin brothers raised in different families.

A religious covered woman has her twin sister on the other side. A farmer, a taxi driver, a teacher, has his twin brother in front of him. And he is endlessly fighting with him.

It's obvious, but they don't see that.

We must put them face to face. They will realize.

We want that, at last, everyone laughs and thinks when he sees the portrait of the other and his own portrait.

The Face2Face project is to make portraits of Palestinians and Israelis doing the same job and to post them face to face, in huge formats, in unavoidable places, on the Israeli and the Palestinian sides.

More here.  [Including a nice video about the project.]

I am not even able to remember fhow many years ago there were attempts by individuals--Arabs and Israelis--to recognize their common bonds, heritages, similarities and somehow come together. Alas, nothing ever seems to come of it except on the very personal level...then it fades.

The same could be said for so many other groups involved in internecine violence: Indians and Pakistanis, Hindus and Muslims in South Asia, Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka and so on...

This is no surprise at all. It dates back to biblical times. They are related. Isaac's oldest son, Esau, is the father of the Palestinians. He's second born, Jacob, is the father of the Israelites.

To be optimistic in a hate filled world...
Of course the overlapping is extensive and obvious. It would be interesting to see the documentary...

It's a great art project and it's well executed.
Let's help to pass this information to people.

I think the photo I've linked to sums up the situation of Palestians more appropiately than this glib art project.

If we want to look for art that may be more effective, Banksy's images are more powerful and actually attempt to compel action to rid the world of such an offense to international law and human rights as the Israeli "security wall". I'm not a cheerleader for Banksy, but I think if art is going to be used it should be more thoughtful than face2face.
