Even in the most orthodox catholic commentary there is an awareness of the fact that Jesus must(as God incarnate)have known that Judas would betray him from all eternity. Jesus's death must be considered a suicide. As he says to Pilate: You would have no power over me if it weren't given you from above." In other words, Jesus is both priest and victim, as in the words of an ancient litany.
Therefore this new gospel adds nothing to the theology of the crucifixion. In fact, it merely makes explicit what is implicit in the cannonical gospels and, in my opinion, is a weaker and more obvious version, and therefore is not suprising at all.
It's principle interest-other than the historical- is for people who believe that some particluar group is responsible for Jesus's death. I can only add in a differnt vein from Johnson' character: take back you suicide!
