James Frey: The Man Who Conned Oprah

From The Smoking Gun:

FreytwotwotwoThree months ago, in what the talk show host termed a "radical departure," Winfrey announced that "A Million Little Pieces," author James Frey's nonfiction memoir of his vomit-caked years as an alcoholic, drug addict, and criminal, was her latest selection for the world's most powerful book club.

In an October 26 show entitled "The Man Who Kept Oprah Awake At Night," Winfrey hailed Frey's graphic and coarse book as "like nothing you've ever read before. Everybody at Harpo is reading it. When we were staying up late at night reading it, we'd come in the next morning saying, 'What page are you on?'" In emotional filmed testimonials, employees of Winfrey's Harpo Productions lauded the book as revelatory, with some choking back tears. When the camera then returned to a damp-eyed Winfrey, she said, "I'm crying 'cause these are all my Harpo family so, and we all loved the book so much."

But a six-week investigation by The Smoking Gun reveals that there may be a lot less to love about Frey's runaway hit, which has sold more than 3.5 million copies and, thanks to Winfrey, has sat atop The New York Times nonfiction paperback best seller list for the past 15 weeks.

UPDATE: More on Frey here.

It is refreshing to see so many people voice their opinions in support of James. If his website were still up, I would email immediately to tell him that there are people out here who support him and stand by him 100%. As I saw above from another post, Oprah is the rat. In order to save face, she felt it necessary to beat this poor man down in front of millions of people. And her behavior was apalling. There is a way of interviewing people to get truthful answers. But the way she did it yesterday made me hate her. Way to make yourself look ugly Oprah! My only hope is that James will see this blog and the many people who support him and his book. Keep your head up James! This too shall pass.

Great. He made millions off of lying. Now he can rewrite the book, tell the truth this time, and still make a few more mill.

Posted by: KJ | Jan 27, 2006 2:30:50 PM

Fuck all you 12 step goofs! You are like fanatical bible thumpers screaming my way is the only way to redemption.

This is where alot of the fury arises from.

Even if the book was published under fiction, it would still be the best book out there on recovery.

Sincerely,
Jason James Morgan

I feel sorry for Oprah and how she showed her big fat ass on television yesterday. I hope all her fans see her for what she is: shes one of them. She tries to act like one of us, saying "her shoes" are the only thing that has changed since she has become rich and famous and created the Oprah empire. BUT SHE'S ONE OF THEM. A lot has changed obviously and she either took some bad advice or huffed some of James Frey's gasoline before her show, because the bitch made a fool of herself. I have much sympathy for James Frey and what he has been through and the credibility that has been taken from him due to FUCKING OPRAH. How quickly the media queen forgets, she has made money off of this man, had so much publicity from this experience and in the end she showed what a cunt she really is. I have read A Million Little Pieces, not because of Oprahs recommendation or all this crap, I read it, learned from it, loved the book. I hope James is strong enough to not let this stop his incredible ability to transpose his thoughts in such a griping and intuitive way. WRITE JAMES FREY, WRITE.
And let the haters hate, and the doubters doubt. He has been made a spectacle of and it is completely undeserving. His book is a recollection of his reality, and each reality is different. It was his account, his reality and I loved it. All of the people hiding behind their computer screnes, with their self righteous comments need to get a life.

Hmmm...some of these comments about the value of James Frey are quite abusive? Does it bother you that much that the illusion was shattered?

What are you going to do when if it is true that Frey plagiarized his books from Eddie Little? How are you people going to justify his actions then? There are more reviews coming out on Amazon comparing Frey's AMLP to Little's "Another Day in Paradise". There is a great article on this as well. Just do a web search of "Plagiarism of James Frey Revealed". Seems all James' fantasy writing of running from the law may just become reality for him after all.

James wanted publicity and recognition...seems he is getting his wishes.

We addicts need to learn the lessons of humility and honesty...sometimes the hard way I guess.

Oprah :

As the head of the most famous book club in America, I ask you, when did we start juging a book by its author? James Frey does not owe any explanation, much less public penance for the choices that he made surrounding the publication of his book. Mozart's pieces are brilliant on their own, and not challenged by his questionable virtues. The same goes for Picasso's. Leave Frey in peace, and just read the book. And do you really need to know what category it falls into before you decide whether or not you like it?

If you want to discuss morals, you might like to question your own before dragging Frey in the mud. I have heard you comment on a man's losing his penis by mistake during an operation with, "what an amazing story!". And I certainly saw you use your audience to settle scores with Frey. Fortunately, the audience seems to have its own jugement.

My own? James, congratulations on your two beautiful pieces, and please keep writing. I hate reading, yet you also kept me up at night with your books. What is more, your writing brought a much needed wind of peace in my life, and your message inspired new beginnings.

Are any of you drug addicts or recovering drug addicts? No? Then FUCK YOU!!! The things Frey describes in the book such as the User dreams, the anger, the fear, the temptation, the sick feeling in his stomach...are real. Ask any addict. I too had an addiction to smoking crack and it cost me two good jobs and my families trust. That book helped me more than any program or counselor ever could. I'm not the type to sit down and read a book. I got A Million Little Pieces as a gift this past Christmas from my cousin. It's the best gift I have ever gotten. Thank you James Frey for a little clarity for those of us who know about addiction. For the rest of you woh jumped on the 'Kill James Frey' bandwagon, Fuck Off!!

People always want the truth. Sometimes it really doesn't matter if you get a word for word account of what really happened. When someone commits suicide, we NEVER know the whole truth as to why they commited suicide. Try and realize that James might have been trying to convey an emotional experience instead of a step to step story. Take for example, you are re-telling an experience you had to your friends, you want to express that feeling that you had at that moment to your friends, so obviously you are going to exaggerate the story to make in interesting and convey that emotion. Those who have read the book and were moved in any way by it, then the message was accomplished. How can you blame James for you buying a book. He lied a little, GET THE FUCK OVER IT!!! You listened to your friends and the media that this is such a great book. Who's fault is it that you bought the book? James didnt put a gun up to your head and say "buy my fucking book or im gonna kill you." No, obviously he didnt, so take responsibility for your own actions. Your own president has lied to you. I dont see anyone bitching about that. He conveyed a message about his battle with trying to recover from addiction. He accomplished that. He didnt say that I am going to write a word for word account of my life. He wrote a memoir about his struggle with addiction. There are a lot of bad books out there. You never hear people bitching about them. So, James writes a good book and since the readers didn't get a the whole truth about his life then everyone goes crazy. I just think that its a petty little fucking problem. If you have the money to buy the book, then you arent in that much debt that you need it back. Shit, even the Bible is exaggerated. No one EVER asks for their money back on that.

I was just wondering why Oprah did not address the good that came from James Frey's book. Even though he did lie about things in his book, for once the American public felt sympathy for addicts instead of treating them like criminals. Addicts are people who need help, who have problems that are like diseases. The way that Oprah handled this situation put addicts in a worse position than they were in before. If he relapses it is only one person's fault-Oprahs.

Posted by: Lindsey | Jan 30, 2006 11:48:39 PM

the book was good it is too bad that he is a liar

Posted by: shaun | Jan 31, 2006 2:29:23 AM

Anyone that knows anything about being an acoholic knows that lying is just one personallity trait that comes along with it. James did not write this book as an autobiography, he wrote it with a memory that has been turned parinoid and confused from addictions. No one needs to defend or criticise James or Oprah. We are all flawed human beings, and none of us could stand up and say we are. For anyone that reads this that is in need of recovery, or is recovering, take one moment at a time, and know there are people in this world that wish you the best with your battle.

I am also a recovering addict and would personally like to thank Frey for publishing his book. Oprah, you dont know shit about addiction, It is a HORRIBLE disease, and I wouldnt even wish it on someone as arrogant as you... keep it clean Frey...

This whole thing is fucking ridiculous. This book is amazing, everyone loved it and i don't think anyone shouldn't love it any less because of any of this bullshit. It's still a good read and i think all of this time put into proving him wrong is time wasted. I think it's time to give james a break already. It's a god damn book and a life changing one for some, so who really cares in the big scheme of it. I hate people who can take something so good and amazing and try and turn it into shit. fuck you, and fuck you to the blind oprah followers who picked up this book when she praised it, and suddenly changed their minds as soon as she did. In the end, it's still a good read.

I JUST HAD AN ALCOHOLIC DEAR DEAR FRIEND WIPE HIMSELF AWAY, IT WAS SO TRAGIC, AND SADLY PREDICTABLE. I AM SOOO STOKED TO SEE SOMEONE SURVIVE THIS DISEASE AND GO ON TO PROFIT FROM IT. RARE INDEED. THE CHANCES OF THIS MUST BE MINUSCULE. HILARIOUS THAT THE 'TRUE MALE' EMERGED IN THE END AND DEAR LILLIE WAS REDUCED TO 3 SENTENCES! YOU MAY BE AN ALCOHOLIC BUT YOUR PRINCIPLE DIAGNOSIS HAS TO BE XY.

who gives a whoot weather or not the story is acutally based on truth?
the object of a novel is to capture the attention of an audience and make you care for the charecter, which frey did. ALL fictional stories start with truth and become embelished..he never said that he was writing his life story, he wrote you a story, and good one at that.

I was once on drugs and fell so low that I just didnt want to live anymore. This book was so great that it made me realize what life is and that we should love it and live it for the rest of our days. When I finished reading My Friend Leonard I was crying like a baby. This was the firts book i ever read in my entire life. This book was a great book and i wish i had Frey's email adress so i could write him giving him thanks for such a great book. Stop being haters and let the man be who he is. A writer that is and a damm good one. thank you James.
