'Pakistan's girl wonder' is likely the youngest certified Microsoft expert

There has been a lot of negative attention focused on Pakistanis since it became apparent that the craven idiots who perpetrated the London bombings were of Pakistani origin. One of those bombers, Shahzad Tanweer, (or at least his family) came originally from the city of Faisalabad in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Lest we start making broad generalizations about Pakistanis, I present this item about a young girl, also from the fair city of Faisalabad:

Todd Bishop in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

226arfa14_programmerSitting down for a personal meeting with Bill Gates this week, 10-year-old Arfa Karim Randhawa asked the Microsoft founder why the company doesn't hire people her age.

Under the circumstances, the question wasn't so unreasonable.

Arfa, a promising software programmer from Faisalabad, Pakistan, is believed to be the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional in the world. The designation, given to outside experts who prove their ability to work with Microsoft technologies, has also been achieved by some teenagers. But it's far more common among adults seeking to advance their computer careers.

Arfa received the certification when she was still 9, an impressive accomplishment in its own right, according to older programmers who have gone through the process.

More here, including an interview with young Arfa.  And there is more here, here, and here.  [Thanks to Sahabzada Abdus Samad Khan.]

Ok...ok...enough already! Isn't it already obvious to y'all that kids actually aren't less intelligent than adults? That old-fashioned idea has more to do with adults protecting their status than anything else. If ten-year-olds took the jobs parents would not be able to feed their families. That anybody is surprised by this is laughable, to me.

Posted by: Randy | Jul 14, 2005 10:11:44 PM

Nice post (and riposte).

Posted by: Levi | Jul 14, 2005 10:59:13 PM

Why doesn't gates hire her? Child-labor laws. But there is nothing preventing her from starting her own business and basically giving Gates a run for his money.

Don't look to other people to hire you. Get out there with your idea/skill and make it on your own. You would think she was at least THAT smart.

Posted by: Dwayne "the canoe guy" | Jul 18, 2005 5:28:04 PM

Randy,

It says more about the exam than children's intelligence. Most of the cases I have seen of these protegies occur by over-motivated parents looking for bar-tricks instead of intelligence.

"Faisalabad in the Punjab province of Pakistan."

umm..last I checked...Pakistan is next to the province of Punjab, not part or in it. Hell they don't even like each other.

Posted by: M | Jul 18, 2005 10:49:49 PM

M, when British India was divided into India and Pakistan, the province of Punjab was divided too. West Punjab is indeed in Pakistan.

I don't know what's necessary to become an MCP, but it sounds amazing! Such an apparent talent needs to be supported - if she wants to, of course.

Posted by: Jens Meiert (of UITest.com) | Jul 19, 2005 3:53:30 AM

Just to clarify, She is [youngest] MCAD i.e. Microsoft Certified Application Developer (not MCP).

That old-fashioned idea has more to do with adults protecting their status than anything else.

That's a pretty sadistic way of looking at parents. Maybe you should consider the other possibility that people just don't know any better? It seems strange to me that someone who clearly wants to send a message of intelligence in their comment would be so quick to jump to evil instead of ignorance.

The fact that people are surprised tells me that people are willing to admit their misconceptions, and I applaud that.

Posted by: Sumeet | Jul 19, 2005 2:24:20 PM

she is an MCAD and an MCP as well. passing one or more Microsoft cert exam qulifies you as an MCP.

Pakistan has considerable amount of good talent but unfortunately goes wasted or drained in the end. Nice to see sis Arifa going well although Gates looks more inclined towards our neighbor country.
